While it is a large and established company, Prime Focus has been considered a second-tier vfx studio and has long sought to buy its way into the first rank of visual effects studios it was a bidder for Rhythm & Hues Studios as that company came out of bankruptcy, and previously pursued Digital Domain when that company was bankrupt and for sale. Malhotra said that as a result of the merger, he expects Double Negative to grow and add jobs. DNEG (formerly known as Double Negative and stylized as D N E G) is a British visual effects, computer animation, and stereo conversion studio that was founded in 1998 in London, and rebranded as DNEG in 2014 after a merger with Indian VFX company Prime Focus, it was named after the letters 'D' and 'Neg' from their former name. PFW’s London location will exit the vfx business and focus entirely on 3D conversion and animation. ![]() Hope and Holben will have free reign to look at PFW’s existing visual effects technology and infrastructure and choose what to keep, said Malhotra. Malhotra told Variety this merger will not simply mean that PFW’s branches will be re-branded with the Double Negative name. and provides vfx, animation and 3D conversion. PFW has branches in Los Angeles, Vancouver, New York, London, Dubai, Mumbai and China. Prime Focus World is the creative services branch of Indian company Prime Focus. Hope said that Double Negative and Prime Focus have been partnering “on and off” for the past three years, beginning with “Total Recall.” The two companies worked together on the upcoming “Hercules” ( pictured). The company has also announced a feature animation division. Malhotra noted that companies such as Rhythm & Hues and Digital Domain (both of which filed for bankruptcy and were acquired by new owners in recent years) “had built up huge costs in California, and had pressure from the studios that wanted to move to more favorable locations.” He added that Prime Focus has been “proactive” about choosing where to grow bases.London-based Double Negative is one of the world’s top vfx studios. Christopher Nolan routinely brings his pictures there and the company won an Oscar for his “Inception.” His next picture, “Interstellar,” is in production there now. A key reason for that is the impact from competitive production incentives. ![]() It’s no secret that the VFX business had been in an unstable period. The animation unit is creating Lego-themed TV series Legends of Chima. The 3D conversion arm is also working on Sin City, as well as Guardians of the Galaxy. ![]() PHOTOS Exclusive Portraits of ‘Hercules’ Star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Both Prime Focus and Double Negative recently completed VFX work on Hercules, and Prime Focus’ upcoming projects include Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which is unique in that the VFX unit is also an investor in the production - a model Malhotra plans to continue to pursue. Prime Focus’ VFX unit has bases in Mumbai, London, Los Angeles, Vancouver and China. In total, the combined business is expected to have roughly 4,000 employees, which in addition to the VFX unit, includes 3D conversion and animation businesses, which currently and will continue to operate under the Prime Focus World brand. Malhotra, Hope, Holben and others will form a management board. Namit Malhotra, Prime Focus founder and CEO of Prime Focus World, told The Hollywood Reporter that Prime Focus would hold roughly 80 percent of the shares in the business. The legal entity for the business will be Prime Focus World. ![]()
